Jodie Foster's latest movie FLIGHTPLAN remains aloft at the US box office, after taking in an extra $15 million (GBP8.3 million) of weekend revenue.

SERENITY, a continuation of writer-director Joss Whedon's cult TV series FIREFLY, debuted in second place with $10.1 million (GBP5.6 million), according to studio estimates.

Animated fantasy TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE took third position with $9.8 million (GBP5.4 million).

After a strong opening in limited release the previous weekend, Viggo Mortensen's A History of Violence expanded and came in fourth with $8.2 million (GBP4.5 million), followed by Paul Walker and Jessica Alba's thriller Into the Blue, which earned $7 million (GBP3.8 million).

Meanwhile, SHIA LaBOUF's THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED, based on the 1913 US Open golf showdown between an unknown amateur and a veteran British champion, opened ninth with $3.75 million (GBP2 million).

But Roman Polanski's Oliver Twist remake, flopped on its wide-release debut, earning just $875,000 (GBP486,100) in revenue.
