Joan Rivers presided over the wedding of a gay couple who were unofficially married by the comedienne during a book signing in New York City June (14).
Jed Ryan and his boyfriend Joseph Aiello attended the event promoting her tome Diary of a Mad Diva at a Barnes & Noble store and asked Rivers to marry them after reading in the book that she has been an ordained minister since previously overseeing the wedding of her party planner.
The pair exchanged vows in front of 400 fans at the event, but the ceremony was not legal as the couple did not have a marriage licence, so they planned a proper wedding - complete with official documents - and Rivers agreed to marry them again.
During the ceremony at New York's Plaza Athenee hotel, Rivers became emotional while announcing them as "husband and husband".
She tells Access Hollywood, "Weddings knock the socks out of me. I just love them. I just love to see two people that really want to be together and make a vow in good times and bad times. It's a very emotional thing. These days we have such a very throw away society."
Rivers stayed for the reception, posing for photos with the grooms and their families and even indulged in some wedding cake.
