Jimmy Buffett, the 64-year-old American singer-songwriter, was rushed to hospital last night (25th January 2011) after falling off the stage at his concert in Sydney, reports TMZ.com. Whilst singing the show's finale song 'Margaritaville', Buffett sustained a serious head injury when he crashed through a large opening at the front of the stage.
An audience member said that the singer appeared to be unconscious for around five or ten minutes before paramedics arrived at the scene. Another Buffett fan told the UK's Daily Telegraph, "We were in the 10th row and it looked like he did a massive face-plant after his encore and pretty much didn't get up". After the incident, the crowd were ushered out of the sold-out Hordern Pavilion but the concert goer added, "No one really wanted to leave, because everyone was anxious to know if he survived the fall. Everyone was pretty horrified". Some reports suggested that the show's flashing lights had temporarily blinded Buffett and caused him to lose his balance on the stage.
The singer, best known for his hit 'Cheeseburger in Paris', is now said to be in a stable condition but will remain under observation at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney.
