The long-gestating project has been in the works since 2011, but only recently began moving forward after film executives reached a deal about music rights with the Experience Hendrix estate, which is run by Janie.

It is set to be the first Hendrix biopic to incorporate unheard music from the estate after Janie approved the release.

She tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "Jimi wrote over 210 songs. We have a huge vault of his music... It's amazing what a workaholic he was. He would carry a four-track or eight-track machine around with him. He'd take it to speakeasys and write songs in his apartment. His music didn't die with him."

Screenwriter Scott Silver, who previously worked on The Fighter and 8 Mile, is crafting the script, and Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass is reportedly on board to helm the project.

Reports suggest big name stars, including Anthony MACkie, have been in talks to play the music icon, but Janie insists they are still trying to cast the lead.

She adds, "We're thinking of an unknown. We'll have people audition and see what's out there."

Hendrix was previously portrayed by Outkast star Andre Benjamin in Jimi: All Is By My Side in 2013.
