Rock legend Jimi Hendrix has been named the greatest guitarist in rock history in a list compiled by ROLLING STONE magazine.

The PURPLE HAZE star, who died in September 1970 aged 27, beat out competition from DUANE ALLMAN of The Allman Brothers Band to the top spot.

WHO rocker PETE TOWNSHEND - who came 50th himself - says Hendrix "made the electric guitar beautiful", while Rolling Stone hailed Allman's ability to transform "the poetry of jamming".

The remaining guitarists to make it into the top 10 are: Bb King, ERIC CLAPTON, ROBERT JOHNSON, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Chuck Berry, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN and Ry Cooder.
