THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST star James Caviezel has defended the graphic violence in the controversial movie about the final hours of Jesus Christ's life.

The actor - who plays Jesus in the much-criticised Mel Gibson film - believes the use of violence in a film can be a useful tool to enhance the severity of an event.

Caviezel, 35, asks, "Do you think the brutality in Schindler's List is necessary?

"Is it necessary to show that much violence in Saving Private Ryan, as a means to get across to the world what war is really like?

"You have to show what really happened or why even go there?

"I'm not interested in making a watered-down version of something."
