British writer John Bayley, who was portrayed by Jim Broadbent in Oscar-winning movie Iris, has died aged 89.

He passed away at his home on the Spanish island of Lanzarote on 12 January (15). No more details were available as Wenn went to press.

Bayley was the husband of celebrated novelist Dame Iris Murdoch, and his best-selling 1998 memoir which documented their life together and her battle with Alzheimer's disease was adapted for the big screen in 2001.

The film starred Dame Judi Dench as Murdoch, while Bayley in his older years was portrayed by Broadbent, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role.

He wrote two more books about his wife, with the last in the trilogy, the Widower's House, hitting shelves in 2001.

Bayley was married to Murdoch from 1956 until her death in 1999. He was awarded a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Cbe) medal that same year.
