The revival of the beloved show earned nine nods, including Outstanding Revival of a Musical and multiple acting nominations for its stars Laura Benanti, Jane Krakowski, Zachary Levi, and Nicholas Barasch.

She Loves Me, which served as the inspiration for films The Shop Around the Corner and You've Got Mail, also earned nods in the Set Design, Costume Design, Orchestrations, Wig and Hair categories.

The stage adaptation of 2000 movie American Psycho follows with eight nods, including an Outstanding Actor in a Musical nomination for Benjamin Walker and Rupert Goold leading the way in the Outstanding Director of a Musical category. The remainder of the nominations are in the technical categories.

Other movies-turned-musicals The Color Purple, School of Rock and Waitress, also scored multiple nominations, with singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles picking up two nominations for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics for her work on Waitress.

Steve Martin and Edie Brickell's Bright Star was also recognised, scoring seven nominations, including Outstanding Music and Outstanding Orchestrations.

Other notable nominees include Jessica Lange (Outstanding Actress in a Play for Long Day’s Journey Into Night), Michael C. Hall (Outstanding Actor in a Musical for Lazarus), Mark Strong (Outstanding Actor in a Play for A View from the Bridge), Billie Joe Armstrong (Outstanding Music in a Play for These Paper Bullets!), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Outstanding Solo Performance for Fully Committed), and pop star Brian Littrell's teenage son Baylee (Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for Disaster!).
