U.S. civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson has honoured late star Whitney Houston while addressing the congregation at the New Jersey church where the singer first showed off her amazing vocals.
Jackson joined members of Houston's extended family for the Sunday morning service at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, where a young Houston once fronted the choir.
The reverend revealed he had spoken to the singer's mother Cissy Houston and she is "devastated" by her daughter's death.
On America's west coast, Jackson's peer and fellow civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton called for a national prayer for Houston during a service at Los Angeles' Second Baptist Church.
