Halima Rashid filed for divorce on Tuesday (21Jun16), citing irreconcilable differences, and the papers revealed the couple had separated on 28 November (15), the same day she was arrested and booked following an altercation at the couple's California home.

Halima, Jermaine's wife of 12 years, escaped charges after officials ruled there was no evidence to prove she attacked him and they were dropped in January (16), when the couple reportedly reconciled.

Halima has now issued a statement about the split, expressing her sadness at the divorce but insisting it is the best course for them both.

"With a great amount of sorrow and regret, I today announce that I am filing for divorce from Jermaine Jackson," she tells People.com. "We have enjoyed many good times during our marriage of nearly 12 years, but we have reached a point where our lives would be better and more productive if we are not married. I respect and care for Jermaine and his legendary family, and feel blessed to have been a part of the Jacksons."

She also asked for the "difficulty" of the decision to be respected and for privacy as "we move on with our lives."

Jermaine, the older brother of Michael Jackson, met Halima in 2004 in a Starbucks and they married later that year in Los Angeles. They had no children, but she is seeking spousal support.

He was previously married to Alejandra Genevieve Oaziaza from 1995 to 2003 and Hazel Gordy between 1973 to 1988. He has five children from these relationships.

This week (beg20Jun16) Jermaine spoke out on Twitter to defend his late brother after an old police report emerged suggesting Michael, who died in 2009, had a stash of pornographic material at his Neverland Ranch home in Santa Barbara, California.

The documents date back to 13-year-old Gavin Arvizo's child molestation accusations, which lead to a trial in 2005. Michael was found not guilty and acquitted of 14 charges, which included four counts of molesting a minor.

"Let Michael rest in peace. Leave. Him. Alone," he wrote, and their sibling La Toya followed suit on Saturday (25Jun16), writing, "Please! May We All Let Him #RIP!"
