Jennifer Lawrence has landed the lead role in the forthcoming movie 'The Hunger Games'.
Jennifer Lawrence, the 20-year-old actress who most recently starred in the Oscar nominated 'Winter's Bone', has beaten off stiff competition to land the role of 'Katniss Everdeen' in 'The Hunger Games', reports MTV News. The movie is the highly anticipated screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' classic children's novel of the same name. In the book, the United States has collapsed and is replaced by a nation named 'Panem', which is divided into 12 official districts. 'Katniss' lives in one of the poorer areas, 'District 12'. Her younger sister 'Prim' is selected at random to participate in 'The Hunger Games', a brutal televised event whereby children are forced to fight to the death, however, Katniss volunteers to take her place. There has been much debate and interest as to which actress would land the role, thought to be one of the biggest female parts in Hollywood. Some fans of the novel have already aired their reservations at the decision, suggesting that Lawrence is too mature to play Katniss. 'True Grit' star Hailee Steinfeld was initially considered to be the favourite to land the role.
Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the drama 'Winter's Bone' and she recently completed work on the forthcoming superhero movie 'X-Men: First Class'.
