Jennifer Lawrence's new The Hunger Games sequel is on course to become the U.K.'s highest-grossing film of the year after taking a massive $20.1 million (£12.6 million) in its opening weekend (21-23Nov14).

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 became an instant success in British cinemas upon its release on Friday (21Nov14), easily outstripping its closest rival The Imitation Game, which remained in second place with $3.3 million (£2.1 million).

Last weekend's (14-16Nov14) chart-topper, Interstellar, dropped two places to third, with box office sales of $3 million (£1.9 million), and the top five was rounded out by Nativity 3: Dude, Where's My Donkey? ($2.4 million/£1.5 million) and biopic Mr. Turner ($570,720/£356,700).
