The announcement was made on Friday (05Feb16) on what would have been Trayvon Martin's 21st birthday. He was shot dead in Florida in 2012 by neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who was later acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges.

The donation, in association with the hip-hop mogul's Roc Nation firm, was raised in part by the first Tidal X: 10/20 concert that took place in Brooklyn, New York last year (15), with performances from Jay Z himself, along with Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne.

The $1.5 million will be distributed though the New World Foundation to organisations including Black Lives Matter, Black Youth Project, Trayvon Martin Foundation, Opportunity Agenda and Gathering for Justice League.

Dania Diaz, Roc Nation's managing director of philanthropy, insists the generous sum is part of a larger effort to keep the company donating to important social causes.

"The process of acquiring recommendations (for nonprofits) was collaborative and inspired by the message that speaks to racial and social inequities and injustice in our society," she adds. "Each year we will support a different initiative."
