Rapper Jay Z was on fine form last night as he delivered hit after hit, and surprise appearance after surprise appearance, at the first headlining slot of the BBC Hackney Weekend in East London.

He was joined on stage at first by today's (Sunday 24th) headliner Rihanna to kick off the night's performance with a rendition of their hit 'Run This Town,' before pumping out hits old and new. His The Throne cohort Kanye West also joined him on stage as the pair performed hits including 'Otis' and 'N***as In Paris' (4 times) from last years Watch the Throne. Rapper M.I.A. also joined Jigga on stage but was plagued by technical problems as her microphone refused to work.

Rain had initially threatened to put a dampener on the free concert , with the 50,000 fans present beginning to get restless when Jay-Z was a no-show for 20 minutes.

The free event continues into today, with headliner Rhi-Rhi set to be joined by Tinie Tempah, Jessie J, Plan B and Professor Green on the main stage. Last night Jay took the stage following performances from rockers Kasabian, as well as Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran, Example, Rizzle Kicks and Leona Lewis on the main stage.
