Rap Mogul Jay Z's Long-running Sample Battle Over The Iconic Hook In Big Pimpin' Is Over.
The hip hop heavyweight and producer Timbaland emerged victorious in their copyright infringement lawsuit in October (15) when a judge ruled the pair didn't lift the melody from Baligh Hamdi's 1957 Egyptian song Khosara, Khosara without permission and that the musician's nephew, Osama Ahmed Fahmy, lacked the legal standing to pursue his copyright claim.
And, on Tuesday (02Feb16), the judge officially dismissed Fahmy's lawsuit.
The case has been rumbling on for the best part of a decade and wrapping up the legal spat, Judge Christine Snyder writes: "In the instant case, the Court determined that plaintiff had assigned all of his economic rights... and therefore was not 'the legal or beneficial owner of an exclusive right under a copyright'."
Fahmy's attorneys are expected to appeal the decision.
