FRANK MUNDUS, the New York shark hunter who inspired Jaws, has died. He was 82.
Mundus died on Wednesday (10Sep08) in Honolulu, Hawaii of a heart attack.
He was celebrated by Jaws author Peter Benchley as the inspiration for the 1975 film's shark-obsessed fisherman, Captain Quint - played by actor Robert Shaw.
Mundus quickly gained notoriety for catching a shark estimated to weigh more than 4,500 pounds (2,041 kilograms) in the 1970s and began taking Benchley out to sea, before his harpooning tales were immortalised by Hollywood director Steven Spielberg.
Mundus is survived by his wife, Jeanette; a sister; three daughters from his first marriage; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
