Australian singer Jason Donovan started snorting cocaine in the 1990s in a desperate bid to be cool.
The Too Many Broken Hearts hitmaker became pop's wholesome poster-boy in the late 1980s thanks to a string of ballads, before becoming a star of stage musicals in London's West End.
But Donovan soon tired of his family-friendly image, and began indulging in drugs, with his habit spiralling dangerously out of control for half a decade before he got clean in 2000.
And the star reveals that a desire to be seen as edgy was the catalyst behind his addiction.
He says, "Life is a journey. When I first started out. I wanted things to work and I had no idea my career would be as big as it was. But I never felt truly comfortable. The whole image of this perfect boy next door was created for me.
"As I grew up I felt desperately uncool and I idiotically thought drugs would make me cool. Of course they didn't. Taking drugs just isn't cool - it takes over your life."
