Natasha Hays, 38, was asleep in her Kansas City, Kansas home when someone fired shots into her bedroom, according to local news reports.

Her 14-year-old child heard the shots first and found Hays dead and lying still under the covers. Her two other children, ages 18 and 16, were also awakened by the gunfire, but not harmed.

The suspect has yet to be apprehended and an investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Hays' superstar relative took to Twitter on Wednesday (31Aug16) to share the sad news, writing, "Gun violence has struck home. My beautiful 1st cousin was murdered. She was a mother of 3. Loved by her community. #NatashaHays #sayhername."

Referencing the increase of deaths by gun violence in the U.S. over the past couple of years, Monae added, "#KansasCity #Gunviolence is still keeping our city in a dark place. The fear of 'who is next?' never leaves. Praying4more light (sic). Help us.

"Nobody deserves to lose their mother, sister, cousin, friend, etc to the hands of evil. Evil has no race... Hearing your uncle on the phone while he tries to make sense of his daughter being murdered is the most helpless feeling in the entire world."

The Tightrope's singer plea for peace comes days after basketball player Dwyane Wade revealed he too has been affected by senseless acts of gun violence, after his cousin Nykea Aldridge was fatally wounded while pushing a baby stroller down the street.

In a grief-stricken tweet, the NBA athlete, who is married to actress Gabrielle Union, wrote: "My cousin was killed today in Chicago. Another act of senseless gun violence. 4 kids lost their mom for NO REASON. Unreal. #EnoughIsEnough".
