Period drama PRIDE + PREJUDICE stormed to the top of the UK box office during its opening weekend on release.

The big screen adaptation of JANE AUSTEN's classic novel grossed GBP2.5 million ($4.5 million) - four times more than closest rival THE LONGEST YARD.

The prison comedy only managed takings of GBP839,000 ($1.5 million) and slipped to second place, while THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN took third position.

Australian horror movie WOLF CREEK debuted at number four, while CINDERELLA MAN slipped to fifth position during its second week on release.
