Choked up country singer Jana Kramer had to halt a recent gig to fight back tears after a fan thanked her for opening up about her domestic violence hell.
The star shared her experiences during her marriage to ex-husband Michael Gambino, who was jailed for premeditated attempted murder before committing suicide in 2012, while promoting her stint on U.S. reality show Dancing With the Stars, and she has been blown away by the support of other women.
But one fan really left her speechless and on the verge of tears at a recent gig.
"I was playing a show two weeks ago and this girl gave me her phone and written in the notes section she'd written, 'You saved me'," she tells Us Weekly, "and right away my eyes just started welling up. And she's like, 'Seriously, thank you, you saved me'." I had to stop singing the song."
"I wanted to help people, and the fact that people are talking about it and spreading awareness means that it'll only help more people," she added.
And it appears Dancing With the Stars has helped Jana channel her thoughts and emotions in a positive way: "It's been very therapeutic," she adds. "I've gotten a lot of confidence and I've realised my strength through all this, and what I have to give."
The former One Tree Hill star has become a big advocate in the fight to raise awareness about domestic violence, and on 17 October (16), she took to Instagram and wrote: "1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and more than 3 million children witness it at home in the U.S. I am a survivor, myself.
"As a mother, I think of my own daughter - I want my daughter to know that no man should ever put their hands on her."
And asked for her message to other women battling domestic violence, Kramer, who is estranged from her husband Michael Caussin, told Us Weekly, "Be strong, know your worth, know you're beautiful and don't settle for anything less."
