James McAvoy has explained that the best thing about working alongside Angelina Jolie was her lack of pretence.

The Scottish actor stars with Jolie in new action movie Wanted and said her experience of action films was invaluable for a genre virgin like himself.

And speaking ahead of the film's release, McAvoy explained that a star as huge as Jolie was nonetheless a delight to work with.

"The thing I most appreciated from Angelina was that she doesn't take herself too seriously," he explained.

"And she kept reminding us that if you can't have fun when you're making an action movie, you shouldn't be doing it."

Wanted tells of Wesley Gibson (McAvoy), an apathetic office worker whose life is transformed when he meets the enigmatic Fox (Jolie) who recruits him into The Fraternity, a secret society of assassins.

And as part of his training, Wesley is subjected to a brutal beating from Fox, a scene that McAvoy admitted was fairly emasculating to shoot.

"I don't think in the script for the fight scene that Wesley throws a punch but in the film he says 'I'm going to kick your f*****g ass' and swings for her," he revealed.

"That was completely added because I felt so undermined!"

Wanted is released on June 25th.
