The Sopranos star, who passed away in 2013 after suffering a heart attack, began developing a drama called Big Dead Place in 2011. He served as a producer on the film and had hoped to tackle the starring role.

Now editors of The Hollywood Reporter report executives at HBO, which was home to Gandofini's mob TV series, have decided to move forward with the movie, hiring The Sopranos alum Tim Van Patten as director and executive producer.

Big Dead Place is inspired by author Nicholas Johnson's memoir, Big Dead Place: Inside the Strange & Menacing World of Antarctica, about scientists working at a research station in Antarctica.
