THE SOPRANOS star James Gandolfini is shocked by the number of parents who allow their young children to watch the violent American TV drama about gangsters in New Jersey.

Gandolfini, who plays mob boss Tony Soprano, defends the show's level of violence as suitable for adults, but believes parents should censor what they allow their offspring to witness on the box.

Gandolfini says, "You can't win. But younger people shouldn't be watching this.

"I have eight-year-olds asking for autographs. I say, 'How do you know I am?'

"And they say they watch the show. I go, 'Christ. Oh God.'"
