James Gandolfini's widow attends wake

James Gandolfini's family gathered for his wake on Wednesday (26.06.13) ahead of his funeral.

Widow Deborah Lin Gandolfini - who married the actor in 2008 - arrived in a car with their nine-month-old daughter Liliana to the invitation-only event which was held at the Robert Spearing Funeral Home in Park Ridge, New Jersey, near where the late 51-year-old actor grew up in Westwood.

Funeral workers were seen bringing in numerous bouquets of flowers into the building, and police shut down the street adjacent to the funeral home to prevent the public from intruding on the service.

Attendees included Johanna Antonacci - one of James' sisters - and various other family members such as his aunt, uncle and cousins.

The wake started at 4pm and was due to take place until 9pm.

Bob Price - the husband of one of James' cousins told the New York Daily News newspaper: '' It's a nightmare for the whole family. It's a horrible, horrible thing, everybody is just devastated. This man was everybody's hero. It's just the worst thing that could have happened.''

James died on June 19 while on vacation with his 13-year-old son Michael - from his first marriage to Marcy Wudarski - in Rome.

His funeral will be held today (27.06.13) at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City.

Meanwhile, Broadway theatres dimmed their marquee lights in honour of the late 'Sopranos' star as a mark of respect.

The actor got one of his first major breaks when he appeared in a 1992 Broadway production of 'A Streetcar Named Desire' - starring with Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange - and he was also nominated for the Tony award for Best Actor in a Play in 2009 for his role in 'God of Carnage'.

Paul Libin, executive vice president of the Jujamcyn Theater, said: ''He's a great actor ... He was a special treasure.''
