Jake Gyllenhaal and sister Maggie have escaped a fire that destroyed a northern California lodge.

The siblings were staying at Manka's Inverness Lodge when a fire broke out early on Wednesday morning, forcing the celebrities and around a dozen other guests to flee the fire in their bed-clothes.

Brokeback Mountain star Jake was hailed for his bravery during the ordeal. "Jake was helping me pull things out of the fire," said the lodge's co-owner Daniel DeLong.

No-one was injured in the fire, which is said to have been caused when a tree fell onto a hot-water heater, but the main lodge and restaurant are said to be a total loss. It took fire fighters nearly four hours to contain the flames.

Both the restaurant and the lodge are popular with celebrities. Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Corwall, dined at the restaurant in 2006, while the Gyllenhaal siblings are said to be regular guests. Some of the guests over Christmas included actress Frances McDormand and director Joel Cohen.

According to Manka's website, the restaurant and the main lodge are now closed until further notice but the cabins, annex and boat house remain open for business.
