Soul classic HOLD ON, I'M COMING was the result of a late-night toilet rush in STAX RECORDS' STUDIO A.

Songwriting greats Isaac Hayes and DAVID PORTER, dubbed the 'LENNON + McCARTNEY of soul', were working on new compositions early one morning when Porter dashed off to relieve himself.

He recalls, "The restroom was in the corner of the studio and it was periodically used as an echo chamber. I was in the restroom peeing at about 2.30 in the morning and Isaac was rushing me because it was late.

"He was like, `C'mon man,' and I shouted back, 'Hold on, I'm coming,' and I stepped to the door and he was like, 'Got it.' Twenty minutes later we had written it."

The song has since become one of the biggest Stax tunes, recorded by artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, Solomon Burke, SAM + DAVE, Boney M, CLIFF BENNETT + THE REBEL ROUSERS, Michael Bolton and Eric Clapton among others.

Porter admits the songwriting duo often wrote "nonsense songs" just to see if tunes about nothing could be hits.

He adds, "One time we wrote a nonsense song called YOU GOT ME HUMMIN' - it didn't make any sense at all and it was a big record for us. We had so many hits that had staying power and we were really blessed."
