Iggy Pop, Michael Stipe and Matt Bellamy have designed guitars for charity.

The musical trio are among a host of famous faces - which also includes Eurythmics star Dave Stewart, former Cure guitarist Pearl Thompson, film directors Gus Van Sant and Sam Taylor-Johnson and comic book artist Steve McNiven - to have crafted custom Carparelli instruments for an auction next month to raise money for War Child USA, which helps children and young people in areas of armed conflict.

'Lust for Life' rocker Iggy has named his guitar 'Soulman'.

He said: ''Soulman goin' 110 / colored dots signify the end / Soulman sings a soulful song / clear and simple, deep and long.''

And former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe's six-stringed instrument has been named 'Radiant Guitar' and the 'Nightswimming' singer was ''honoured'' to be asked to submit a design.

He told Rolling Stone magazine: ''No person, and certainly no child, should have to endure what many of these children have lived through, and in some cases, still live in.

''I am honoured to be able to make a small contribution towards helping them. Thank you War Child for that opportunity.''

The auction will take place at Bonhams New York on 9 November.
