The British star plays hero Roland in the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King’s sci-fi Western book series, while Oscar-winner MCConaughey plays the villain Man in Black.

While filming in South Africa, Elba and MCConaughey decided to stay in character off-screen by not interacting with each other, in hopes of bringing an added level of authenticity to set.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Radio at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday (21Jul16), Elba admitted, "We sort of avoided each other, because the Man in Black and Roland don’t see each other. So we played that chemistry a bit until we got onto set, and it was great. It really worked for the story, and it worked for that particular scene."

Their first-ever meeting a few years ago was the complete opposite of their The Dark Tower experience - the Hollywood hunks initially met in a bathroom during an awards show.

"Matthew and I met in the men’s restroom at one of the award ceremonies," Elba laughed. "I think he’d just won an Oscar, and I was congratulating him over one of the stalls. It was a bit awkward."

The Dark Tower hits cinemas in February (17).
