Bosses at America's Lifetime network have given the greenlight for a TV movie version of the beloved 1988 film, which starred Midler and Barbara Hershey.

The Frozen star will take on Midler's role of aspiring singer CC.

The remake is due to premiere next year (17), and will feature Menzel singing new versions of Midler's classic songs Wind Beneath My Wings and The Glory of Love, as well as new tracks.

In addition to being a box office success, the film's theme, Wind Beneath My Wings, also scored two Grammy Awards for Record and Song of the Year, and became one of Midler's most popular songs.

News of the Beaches TV movie comes a week after the film's director, Garry Marshall, passed away at the age of 81. After learning of his death last Tuesday (19Jul16), Midler took to Twitter to pay tribute to her pal.

"My wonderful, hilarious, big-hearted friend Garry Marshall died yesterday," she wrote. "He guided Barbara Hershey and me through #Beaches..."
