Despite accepting a knighthood in 1991, SIR Ian McKellen is a fierce critic of Britain's honours system.

Just a day after it was revealed that stars like David Bowie had refused honours from Queen Elizabeth II, the 64-year-old admits he has had his doubts about being elevated by royalty.

He says, "In my heart of hearts I think it would be better if there weren't these titles because some people may think that someone is better than anyone else.

"Besides, I long ago decided that I was Ian McKellen, nor Mr McKellen or Sir Ian."
