The X-Men actor will portray famous conman-turned-showman P.T. Barnum in the biopic, while Zac Efron and Michelle Williams recently entered negotiations to co-star.

Now Disney favourite Zendaya is preparing to join the circus, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She has been tapped to play a trapeze artist, who captures the affections of Efron's playwright character.

Brokeback Mountain star Michelle will feature as Jackman's onscreen love interest, a part Hugh's Les Miserables castmate Anne Hathaway was previously linked to.

Michael Gracey is attached to direct the film from a script by Toy Story 3's Michael Arndt.

Jackman will serve as a producer on the movie, which will chronicle the life of the Barnum & Bailey Circus troupe founder, after developing it as a passion project for years.

If Zendaya signs on, The Greatest Showman on Earth will serve as the singer/actress' first role in a big screen musical.

She is also set to star in the latest Spider-Man revamp, Spider-Man: Homecoming, opposite Tom Holland as the web-slinging superhero.

Zendaya, 19, follows in the footsteps of the franchise's previous female leads Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone, who featured as love interests Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy for former Spider-Man stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, respectively.

Tom made his debut as the latest incarnation of Spider-Man and his alter ego Peter Parker in the recent Captain America: Civil War, ahead of the 2017 release of his stand-alone movie, which is currently in production.
