That television commercial featuring a member of Argentina's Hockey team training in the Falkland Islands, ending with the tagline "To compete on English SOiL, we train on Argentine soil," was not, as originally presumed, commissioned by the Argentine government. According to Advertising Age , the 90-second spot was produced on spec by the Buenos Aires unit of the Young & Rubicam advertising agency, then shopped to several potential advertisers (including Nike which is represented by another ad agency) who rejected it, before the government came aboard. Martin Sorrell, head of the British marketing conglomerate WPP Group, which owns Y&R, has condemned the ad and apologized to the British government. Although the Falklands are less than 300 miles off the Argentine mainland, they have never been occupied by Argentina. They have been a British colony since 1833.
