Controversial German film Head-On and Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's Bad Education head the nominations for Saturday's (11DEC04) EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS in Barcelona, Spain.

A total of 44 films are in the running for the 17th annual awards presented by the EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY, which is presided by German arthouse director Wim Wenders and made up of 1,600 film industry professionals from around the continent.

Head-On centres on the struggles of a mismatched Turkish couple living in Germany, while Bad Education tells the tale of gay friends traumatised by childhood sexual abuse.

Fatih Akin's Head-On - or GEGEN DIE WAND in German - sparked uproar when it emerged that its little-known leading actress Sibel Kekilli had made hardcore pornography films earlier in her career.

Meanwhile, Almodovar's Bad Education is nominated for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenwriter.
