The Spirited Away filmmaker stepped away from the movie industry after the 2013 release of his final project, The Wind Rises, but in 2015, he decided to return to work to direct his first 3D computer-animated film, a short anime about a tiny caterpillar.

Now it appears Miyazaki, 76, is not yet ready to return to retirement again, according to his longtime producer Toshio Suzuki.

On Friday (24Feb17), Suzuki revealed the master animator had already presented storyboards for a new Studio Ghibli release, and is gearing up to shoot the film.

"Right now in Tokyo, he's putting all his effort into making (the feature)," he said.

Japanese reports suggest the new movie could be a full-length version of his 2015 short, Boro the Caterpillar, and while Suzuki has refused to share further details, he promises fans will love it.

"All I can say is that it's really interesting," he added.
