Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder lost a staggering 13 kilograms (29 pounds) ahead of the band's comeback tour, by taking up mountain biking.

The portly hellraiser had bulked up to a scales-breaking 95 kilograms (210 pounds) - but bandmate BEZ stepped in with a novel way to shed his excess fat.

Ryder says, "My weight had ballooned to 210 pounds and I was getting a bit vain about going back on stage with a beer gut, so Bez made me get a mountain bike a while ago, and I used it.

"I loved my GUINNESS, but had to stop and get down to 182 pounds. I went on a lobster and mussels diet and went on a mountain bike course in the Peak District (north England).

"The first time Bez, who is Mr Healthy, took me cycling was hard. I came back nearly dead, but I got there."
