The Grateful Dead's beloved manager Rock Scully has died.

Scully, who managed the psychedelic rock band for 20 years, passed away on Wednesday (17Dec14) after losing his battle with lung cancer, according to the Monterey County Weekly.

Scully signed on as the Dead’s manager after witnessing a performance in the mid-1960s in San Francisco, when the group was named the Worlocks. Just years later, the band was performing at Woodstock and the Monterey Pop Festival.

In 2001, Scully co-authored a bestselling biography, titled Living with the Dead.
