E! News presenter Giuliana Rancic has announced that she's to undergo the very difficult steps of a double mastectomy following revelations in October that she is suffering from breast cancer. Somewhat horrifyingly for the 37 year-old, Rancic discovered she had the disease after attempting to get pregnant through Ivf; last month on E! she recalled her reaction to finding out the news, describing it as a "kick in the stomach" and going on to add "It's what you expect, but so much more, it was like, incredible instant sobbing and the world just crashed down around me. I couldn't believe it-36 years old, no family history? I couldn't believe it."
Now though Rancic has decided to come public about the double mastectomy for what she hopes are positive reasons. "I would like to take the stigma away," she explained, "'Mastectomy' the word seemed so scary to me at first. After doing research and seeing the advancements, the surgery has come a long way from 20 years ago. The results can be incredible. Not only can it save your life, but you can come out feeling healthier and with a positive self-image."
The star - who goes under the knife as soon as next week - was also quick to thank those who'd supported her in the past month, stating "When I went public with my breast cancer diagnosis six weeks ago, the overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers and support really helped me heal faster. I want to make sure to thank everyone and give them an update for being so kind and loving and supportive." We can only wish her the best of luck.
