Pop babes Girls Aloud are determined to score a number one hit this Christmas (04) - with a cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood classic THE POWER OF LOVE.

The British group - formed by reality TV show POPSTARS: THE RIVALS - are keen to be recognised as a musical force and abolish the stigma attached to bands created by television, and they deem the 1984 ballad the ideal catalyst to achieving that goal.

A source says, "Girls Aloud are putting a lot of hard work into their new album as they want to shake off their Popstars: The Rivals tag and be taken seriously.

"They got a great response when they covered (EAST 17 tune) STAY ANOTHER DAY, so they know picking the right cover again would be a smart move."
