Geri Halliwell is turning to charity in a bid to relaunch her pop career - she's battling girl band Girls Aloud to land a deal to record Britain's CHILDREN IN NEED song.

The former SPICE GIRL, 32, has suffered a slump in chart glory since scoring success with her early solo tunes, but she hopes winning a BBC contract to provide the theme for this November's (04) Children In Need TV event - an entertainment-based fundraising special - will propel her back into the pop limelight.

Halliwell has two songs in contention for the charity - her new single RIDE IT and another track, FEEL THE FEAR. Meanwhile, Girls Aloud have recorded a cover of THE Pretenders' 1994 hit I'LL STAND BY YOU.

A record industry insider says, "The Children In Need single is really high profile and is such a good cause that the artist usually ends up at number one in the chart.

"It would be a fantastic start for Geri to make her comeback but she will have to use all her girl power to battle Girls Aloud."
