The Fox News anchor had struggled to get in contact with his daughter Simone, who is studying abroad in the French capital, when the attacks began, editors at Access Hollywood report.

Simone was at the international soccer match between France and Germany at the Stade de France when terrorists detonated suicide bombs outside the stadium.

More than 120 people are reported to have died in the attacks, during which gunmen targeted restaurants and bars and opened fire on innocent bystanders.

Reports suggest more than 80 revellers were killed at the Eagles of Death Metal concert at the Bataclan venue in the city after armed men took hostages and began shooting.

While on air on Friday, Rivera recounted his 21-year-old daughter's harrowing ordeal, telling his colleague Shepard Smith that Simone and her friends heard "three explosions" during the soccer match.

Videos posted online show the moments that the bombs exploded outside the stadium, with members of both teams stopping play and looking shaken.

Rivera revealed that "SWAT teams and emergency services" then entered the arena, trying to help thousands of panicked fans who had come to watch the game.

Simone and her friends managed to flee the venue before police officers sealed the exits, and she described the scenes as "chaos".

"They left the stadium, they (the crowd) ran one one way, my daughter Simone and her friends - there were four of them in the party - started going in the other (direction), and then they saw the crowd, another crowd pouring from one exit. It was chaos...

"This is a terrifying, military-scale attack... I just thank God she wasn't at the rock concert."

He later credited the extra security guards at the match, who were posted there due to French President Francois Hollande's presence, with making sure the bombers did not manage to get inside the stadium.

"This is a major, major attack on a U.S. ally. God knows what's next," he added.

Rivera's daughter was left stranded in the city, unable to get home, after security officials and police shut down the public transport network and ordered the public to stay indoors.

He later posted a photo of his daughter on his Twitter.com account, writing, "She is safe. Thank God daughter Simone is safe. After fleeing soccer stadium she was stranded (sic). A blessed Paris friend drove to area & is taking her home."
