Singer/songwriter BURT BACHARACH struggles to explain why he has suddenly developed a political conscience at the age of 76, because he spent the Vietnam War writing love songs.

The legend's new album heavily criticises US President George W Bush, the war in Iraq and he expresses the hurt he felt following Democrat John Kerry's defeat at last year's (04) Presidential election.

He says, "That's the weird thing. How does this guy who writes simple love songs end up doing a political album? I'm not a political guy. I never went on marches. At the height of the Vietnam War I was writing WALK ON BY.

"Suddenly, at the age of 76, I find myself devastated when Kerry loses the election and I'm writing about Iraq. Don't you think that's weird?"
