GEORGE MELLY DIES English jazz singer and author GEORGE MELLY died on Thursday morning (05Jul07) in his London home. He was 80. The Liverpool-born performer passed away after suffering from vascular dementia and lung cancer. Just days after performing his latest ever gig at the famous 100 Club in London on 10 June (07), Melly was forced to pull his 15 June (07) concert in Shrewsbury, Shropshire due to ill health. After starting his jazz career in the late 1940s having served in World War II in the British Navy, Melly took up journalism the 1960s and served as a film critic for British broadsheet The Observer and tabloid Daily Mail. Melly returned to jazz in the 1970s playing with John Chilton's Feetwarmers, who he remained with until 2003. In 1978, he teamed up with The Stranglers to record Old Codger. He is survived by his second wife Diana, son Tom, daughter Pandora, step-daughter Candy and four grandchildren.
