Movie veteran George Hamilton's physician partner begged him not to enter the Australian jungle for a reality show - but he was determined to live out his adventure fantasies.
Hamilton's doctor girlfriend Barbara Sturm feared the 70 year old would struggle with the gruelling tasks in U.K. series I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! after undergoing knee replacement surgery just four months ago.
He tried to get fit by taking part in a 10-day boot camp with a martial arts instructor before his trip - but he still struggled in the camp, losing 14 pounds (6.4 kilograms) during his time on the programme.
Hamilton explains, "I felt so low physically that I wanted to lie down all the time. My girlfriend said to me that I shouldn't do the show. I was weighed today and I lost a stone - but I know everyone is lacking minerals in the jungle."
The former Dynasty actor admits he first considered quitting when he fell and cut his arm after just three days, adding, "I usually wore my boots everywhere, but I had some new rubber shoes that I was trying out after my shower. I slipped on the rocks and tore a chunk out of my arm. It shook me a little. I thought, 'Maybe I should've listened to the people who said I shouldn't go on the show.'"
As a result of the accident, the star was ruled out of several challenges: "I think the producers saw me slip on the rocks and they wanted to protect themselves as well as protect me. It was frustrating. I didn't come over here to camp out and laugh."
Hamilton had been tipped to win the contest, but walked out on Monday (30Nov09).
