Horror movie maestro George A Romero insists zombies should always be working class, as the undead are far more terrifying if they appear to be the rotting shells of ordinary people.

The cult director ignores complaints his zombies are too normal, urging crew on his latest fright-fest Land of the Dead to make the brain-eating corpses look like real men and women, who once lived everyday lives.

He says, "I've always thought of them that way. One of the complaints I have about some of the other zombie things is that it's just people in Nikes.

"I always talk to the wardrobe people and say, "Give this guy a Santa Claus suit, or this girl a cheerleader costume - make them seem a little bit more like the neighbours."
