The writer has inked a two-year development deal with U.S. cable network HBO, the same channel which airs the Game Of Thrones TV adaptation, and his first project will be Captain Cosmos.
The show will be set "at the dawn of the age of TV in 1949" and follows "a visionary young writer" who "creates a science fiction series that tells stories no one else will dare to tell", according to Entertainment Weekly.
Martin reportedly came up with the idea for the series while working on the long-awaited sixth instalment of his A Song of Ice and Fire saga, following the 2011 release of the last book in the franchise, A Dance with Dragons.
He is hoping to have the sequel, The Winds of Winter, complete in time for next year (16) so the sixth season of the Game of Thrones TV adaptation can premiere as planned.
Season five is set to launch around the world this weekend (12Apr15).
