The former hellraiser was in and out of jail from the age of 16 for a string of offences including drug dealing.
But when a judge offered him a stint with the marines instead of further imprisonment, the singer learned the biggest lesson of his life.
Morgan, 37, tells Britain's Cosmopolitan magazine, "I learnt to take responsibility for myself. And I didn't want to go back and hang out with the same guys.
"When I got out of the service, I wanted to be proactive in my own life. I knew I had to be positive and not add to the bad karmic debt I'd built up."
