Horror flick Freddy Vs Jason enjoyed a killer weekend at the US box office, debuting with $36.4 million (GBP22.7 million).

The respectable haul pulled in more than the combined total for the entire runs of the last installments in franchises FRIDAY THE 13TH and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

Last year's (03) JASON X - the 10th Friday the 13th flick - made $12.6 million (GBP7.8 million), while 1994's WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE - the seventh in the Nightmare on Elm Street series - grossed a total of $18.1 million (GBP11.3 million).

The idea of pairing Nightmare's FREDDY KREUGER and Friday's JASON VORHEES had been anticipated since the early 1990s, so great fan anticipation helped box office figures.

Colin Farrell's S.W.A.T., the previous weekend's top movie, fell to second place with $18.6 million (GBP11.6 million), bringing its 10-day total to $70.1 million (GBP43.8 million).

Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall's western Open Range opened at number three, with $14.1 million (GBP8.8 million), while Jamie Lee Curtis's flick Freaky Friday hung in at the fourth spot.

Brittany Murphy's Uptown Girls, which also stars I AM SAM star DAKOTA FANNING, premiered in fifth place with $11.2 million (GBP7 million).
