Legendary movie-maker Francis Ford Coppola has praised Mel Gibson's controversial new movie The Passion Of The Christ, and told the star to ignore his critics.

The film, which chronicles the final 12 hours in Jesus Christ's life, has sparked controversy in Hollywood and among religious groups - but Ford Coppola insists Gibson has every right to make his movie.

The Apocalypse Now auteur says, "I think it's wonderful that a filmmaker would put his own money in and make something he has so much feeling about. If people don't approve, they should make their own movie that shows another perspective. That's the beauty of our system."
