The Origins of AIDS Review

Where did AIDS come from? It's conventionally accepted that HIV originated in African simians and was -- somehow -- transmitted to humans, where it finally began to spread. This documentary offers an opposing view -- and no, it's not a CIA conspiracy -- that infected monkeys were used in the creation of polio vaccine used in the Congo in the late 1950s. (Minced monkey kidneys were used as a basis for the vaccine, it turns out.)

Sounds perfectly logical and possible to me. But here's the problem with the film: It spends most of its time treating this idea as a radical near-conspiracy when in all likelihood it could very well be the case. Any rational observer would probably agree... except for those implicated in creating a vaccine that could have started one of the worst epidemics in history, right? Unfortunately this devolves into a he-said/she-said argument about whether or not those involved in the creation of the polio vaccine used monkeys.

The proof is circumstantial but the theory is credible. Is there enough of a hook here to merit a feature-length film being made about the theory? Considering that the answer will ultimately have no bearing on when and whether AIDS is ever cured, it seems like a stretch.

Aka Les Origines du SIDA.
