The Murder in China Basin Review

If there was any justice in Hollywood, Norman Gerard would have a TV pilot or a couple million in mad money to make a feature film. His independent movie The Murder in China Basin, is a little formulaic, a little too reminiscent of Chinatown, and way too awfully titled, but for an indie it's remarkably professionally made.

Of course, the other way to look at China Basin is as a formulaic knockoff of Chinatownwith a bad title, which might explain why Gerard hasn't made a film since this 1999 endeavor.

Whatever, fans of the genre and especially L.A. insiders will find a little something to enjoy on the screen here. Philistines will probably like the fact that half a dozen female stars strip down in the endless sex scenes, but it's Noel Harrison who steals the show by breaking into song at periodic intervals. Unfortunately, the movie loses steam and direction when Harrison's character is murdered -- which provides the impetus for the plot (a frame up, yadda yadda yadda). By the time the clown rape comes around, you'll probably have given up on the film.

Still, this is an interesting film, at least for awhile.
